Monument to Victor Emmanuel II
After an extenuating competition, the realization of the monument was entrusted to Giuseppe Sacconi and was begun in 1885, to be finished and inaugurated in 1911. Its intentions were those of celebrating the splendor of the nation after the Unification of Italy, and with this in mind Sacconi envisioned it in imposing classi cisti c forms that would mirror the emotional and patriotic heart of the monument, the Altar to the Homeland, which was in turn envisioned as architecture within architecture with the solemn statue of Rome keeping watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Note should also be taken of the equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II, for it is an integral part of the monument, also decidedly classicistic in style, as well as the fateful words from the Bulletin of Victory of Nov. 4, 1918. Entrance to the Museo Sacrario delle Bandiere della Marina Militare is on the left side.
